There was a lot of great picks on your list.

When I started making this, it was easy to come up with things to include. I did figure that it would get quite tough thinking of worthy inclusions after the halfway mark, but it really wasn't. The hard part was getting to #90 and realizing that there was so much stuff I would have to leave out. I didn't get to mention Catherine Keener, or David Fincher, or Juno, or... I still haven't gotten around to checking out Frozen River. I really wasn't a big fan of her turn in The Fighter, but I very much suspect that she has better work on her resume.

Kirk Douglas, despite obviously and understandably having trouble speaking, really did great job. He was charming, funny and really had the audience in the palm of his hand. Great work from a legend.

I can't say I'm a big fan of these personalised presentations for the actors. It all just seems way too back-patting-y for my liking. But yeah, Bridges put more lif einto it than most have. Nevertheless, I was happy to see thay still did the clips for the leads. They were missed.

I think Spielberg said that tonight's winner would join the ranks of [BP winner], [BP winner] and [BP winner], while the movies that don't win tonight will join the group of Citizen Kane, [BP nominee] and [BP nominee]. He was saying that win or not, all the nominees were in good company.Kebabenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00572567348131565857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-716525518869639770.post-13518071821509491762011-02-28T16:35:17.541+01:002011-02-28T16:35:17.541+01:00I've been a fan of Melissa Leo's since her...I've been a fan of Melissa Leo's since her days on Homicide: Life on the Street. She was let go after five seasons despite being recognized as one of the strongest members of the cast. The network (NBC) felt the show already had enough acclaim; what it needed was a larger audience, and it felt that someone younger and sexier than Leo was the way to go. I've always resented that. It wasn't the Academy's job to atone for that, but some part of me felt her win was some kind of long overdue retribution.

The highlight of the entire night had to have been Kirk Douglas. I thought Helena Bonham Carter was going to leap out of her seat after he kept getting sidetracked opening the envelop! He surely had the best line of the night when he admonished Hugh Jackman for laughing: "Colin Firth isn't laughing. He's British!" And amidst all that, he threw in some shameless dirty old man flirting with Anne Hathaway.

Otherwise, I felt that the strongest presence was Jeff Bridges. When he presented the award for Best Actress, speaking to each nominee, it was as though Bridges himself personified not just the Academy, but the industry itself. And he made every word sound as though he himself had written it. Sandra Bullock had comparable material, but it was clear that she was simply reciting text. Bridges spoke with authority and calm, just as we've come to expect from him in a performance.

One last thing. My wife was talking, so I wasn't sure if I heard it or not. When Steven Spielberg introduced Best Picture, did he mention Citizen Kane as a previous Best Picture winner? If so, that was an error; Citizen Kane won just a singular Oscar, for its screenplay. I did enjoy that the orchestra played "Jurassic Park" to accompany Spielberg walking onto the stage, though. As far as I'm concerned, that score is the pinnacle of John Williams's work.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06381792002836474683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-716525518869639770.post-63543981948007284552011-02-18T09:50:01.974+01:002011-02-18T09:50:01.974+01:00Yeah, I can't say I agree with Toy Story 3 bei...Yeah, I can't say I agree with Toy Story 3 being considered an adapted screenplay either. But hey, their game, their rules. As long as they're consistent. I'd acually love to see Toy Story 3 or Winter's Bone pick up this award, but I'm not deluding myself into thinking either has a snowball's chance in hell.

I don't really see Inception winning Original Screenplay either. Sure, it won the WGA, but 1) that's only the writers voting, and 2) The King's Speech was illegible for that award. I think it's too cold and distant for the Academy at large. If something's going to rain on TKS' parade, it's The Kids Are All Right. I like your thought of the LGBT angle giving it a possible edge.

I don't think "talked about" will cut it in Original Score. If it was just their own branch voting, I'd say TSN would stand a better chance. But the soundtrack really is quite different from what AMPAS at large tends to go for. I don't see them being that radical.

I'd love for your MP3 theory to hold true. But it could merely be that it's the only one of the songs that plays well outside of the movie. It's certainly the only one I would listen to of the four.

TKS vs Alice in Costume Design is one of the really hard two-horse-races this year. I could easily see it go either way. Ultimately, I don't see most voters giving it too much thought, though. "Oh, The King's Speech was that period film about royalty. Yeah, that was a good movie!" And then they'll just vote for it without remembering how muted the outfits were in that film. Don't get me wrong: the costumers did a great job. It's just not the stuff the Academy tends to go for.Kebabenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00572567348131565857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-716525518869639770.post-79299114793700407502011-02-17T22:37:01.150+01:002011-02-17T22:37:01.150+01:00Let's see...
I've got The Social Network ...Let's see...

I've got The Social Network for Writing (Adapted Screenplay) because I think most voters recognize how much of a chore it had to have been to create a narrative story from a work of non-fiction. Moreover, it took something as seemingly frivolous as the founding of Facebook and made it compelling.

Toy Story 3 shouldn't even be in this category, except that the Academy's definition of "originality" is kind of peculiar.

Writing (Original Screenplay) I also have going to The King's Speech. Having seen Inception, I was greatly disappointed. It's nothing more than a simple heist movie lacking the social commentary found in Nolan's Batman films, and without any memorable dialog. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that 2010 was an important year for the LGBT community, and Academy voters may be tempted to give the nod to The Kids Are All Right as part of the zeitgeist. It's my dark horse guess, anyway.

For Music (Original Score) I'm sticking with The Social Network, which had the second most talked about score of the year (behind Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy work that wasn't nominated). It gives the film a lot of energy, and even some of its structure. I will be stunned if this goes to Hans Zimmer's monotonous, dull and generic work for Inception.

For Music (Original Song), I've got "Coming Home" from Country Strong. My logic is admittedly dubious: the MP3 is $1.29 on Amazon, whereas the others can be bought for $0.99. That tells me that it's in greater demand, which I'm guessing will translate into higher regard with the voters.

I definitely agree about The Wolfman winning Makeup. I think it's more impressive to create a Wolfman with makeup than CGI, and I suspect the voters will be similarly impressed.

Lastly, Costume Design. I just think it's more impressive to create than to recreate, though I recognize that the Academy has traditionally favored period pieces rather than all-new works. I don't have anything to say about The King's Speech costume designs, except that they looked accurate to me. I wasn't really wowed by them (though I admit the striped suit Geoffrey Rush wore called to mind his performance in The Tailor of Panama, a character not too far removed from his portrayal of Lionel Logue here). Same thing about True Grit: they looked accurate, but didn't really wow me. I'm sticking with Alice in Wonderland here, in spite of previous voting trends.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06381792002836474683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-716525518869639770.post-28812734182417531952011-02-15T08:33:32.158+01:002011-02-15T08:33:32.158+01:00Interesting. I recall hearing high praise for it from a number of awards bloggers (this was supposedly a great year for documentaries overall).

I don't think there's anything preventing a documentary from being nominated in other categories, but obviously it rarely happens. Not sure why, since it's the cinematographers themselves who vote on the nominees in their category, so you'd think there'd be some more appreciation for great craftsmanship regardless of genre. Then again, and as mentioned earlier, they did nominate a foreign film last year, so it's not like they're entirely stuck to merely the standard Oscars films.Kebabenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00572567348131565857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-716525518869639770.post-87926690910998803902011-02-15T03:22:45.955+01:002011-02-15T03:22:45.955+01:00I've said elsewhere, but I'll repeat mysel...I've said elsewhere, but I'll repeat myself here. I know a lot of people thought that Christopher Nolan not being nominated for Directing was the snub of the year, and others thought it was Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy soundtrack being left off the ballot. For my money, the most criminal omission is that Junger and Hetherington weren't nominated for Cinematography for their work on Restrepo.

I don't even know if documentary work is eligible for that category, but even if it's not they still should have found a way to put those guys on the ballot! Their camera work was clearer and easier to follow than most of the action movies I've seen in recent years and they did it while real people were actually shooting at them. They even made the landscape of Afghanistan look great, which is no small feat.

Like I said, if I had a vote, I'd cast it for Restrepo but I have a feeling that the weighty nature of the other nominees will keep it from standing out the way that Exit Through the Gift Shop will. And mind you, I found that film to be engaging, interesting and entertaining.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06381792002836474683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-716525518869639770.post-74244258978431659842011-02-14T23:43:17.848+01:002011-02-14T23:43:17.848+01:00I could see an arguement being made for How To Tra...I could see an arguement being made for How To Train Your Dragon. Have the Best Picture nomination be Toy Story 3's "award", and try to spread some further love to a different animated film. But I really don't see it happening at all, so I think we're in agreement.

I really can't see Biutiful pull this one off. Everyone keeps saying how it's ultra-depressing and such, and that doesn't seem to gel with past results in the category. If voting was handled like in "normal" categories, I could see Bardem's nomination being a factor in its favor. But The requiremen for people to have seen all the nominees means that surface-level momentum like that is meaningless. White Ribbon lost despite Cinematography nod, and Pan's Labyrinth had five noms and three wins and still came up short. Granted, an acting nod weighs heavier, but... nah.

I haven't seen any of the Documentary nominees yet, sadly enough. The one I'm really eager to see is obviously Exit Through the Gift Shop, based on strength of word. I like your theory about art-concious voters giving Exit some help, but it still seems like too "light" a subject to win here. But strangely unlike Foreign Language, this is a category where buzz and frontrunner status often leads to victory. And everyone's talking about Exit Through the Gift Shop. It's a hard category this year.Kebabenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00572567348131565857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-716525518869639770.post-39715661561943028412011-02-14T23:28:31.079+01:002011-02-14T23:28:31.079+01:00A key point here is the fact that the period scene...A key point here is the fact that the period scene happens right at the start of the film. We don't know what the relationship between Carrie and the gym coach was prior to that, so there's some ambiguity preserved there. Considering all the sexual imagery present throughout the film (e.g. the water-spraying fire hose at the prom), I'd say any implied homoerotic undercurrents going on most likely weren't unintentional. But yeah, it does kind of shine a different light at the movie. Odds are I should give it a second chance somewhere down the line.Kebabenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00572567348131565857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-716525518869639770.post-1704892177223403802011-02-14T21:42:40.272+01:002011-02-14T21:42:40.272+01:00I agree: Toy Story 3 is pretty much a given, thoug...I agree: Toy Story 3 is pretty much a given, though I will say that How to Train Your Dragon seemed to get a lot of love when it was released. It would be surprising, but not impossible, for it to sneak in there.

Regarding Foreign Language Films, I know that voters have to actually see all five in order to cast a vote in this category. I haven't seen all of them (in fact, I've only seen Dogtooth), but I'm predicting Biutiful based on the fact that voters will also see Javier Bardem nominated as Best Actor for this film. It's very rare that anyone from a foreign language film is nominated elsewhere, and I suspect there will be some kind of associative value to that nomination.

As for Documentary (Feature), I personally would cast a vote for Restrepo and I won't be surprised if it wins. The footage is amazing, the narrative is focused and the soldiers are surprisingly accessible people. These men don't behave as though they're in uniform and afraid of being reprimanded for not sticking to the script the way soldiers typically act on camera. Instead, we hear very frank discussions with powerful displays of emotion.

That said, my official prediction for this category is Exit Through the Gift Shop, which I made before seeing Restrepo. My logic is that I think the art-conscious voters will identify more easily with its message and commentary than they will with the other four, weightier nominees.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06381792002836474683noreply@blogger.com
